A roadmap for your nationality

Turkish citizenship for South African investors: a new base where continents meet

Direct flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town link South African families to Istanbul, the city where Europe meets Asia. Life by the sea, a strong business hub and a second citizenship for your family can all come from one decision: property of at least USD 400,000, or USD 500,000 in funds, deposits or bonds. Our investor relations team is with you from start to finish.

Why Türkiye for South African investors

From Johannesburg and Cape Town

There are direct flights to Istanbul from Johannesburg and Cape Town. From Istanbul Airport, short connections take you to London, Frankfurt, Paris and many more cities, so business and family travel can be planned from one convenient hub.

A coastal life you'll recognise

Bodrum's marinas, the golf courses of Belek near Antalya and the small coves of the Aegean feel familiar to South Africans who love the outdoors and the sea. Long summers, fresh seafood and calm coastal towns suit both holidays and retirement.

A business hub close to Europe

Istanbul is an established centre of finance and trade, a few hours' flight from Europe's markets. Whether you work in mining, agriculture, logistics or services, Turkish citizenship lets you set up a company here and strengthen your links across Europe and the Middle East.

Cosmopolitan, multilingual cities

Istanbul and Antalya are cosmopolitan cities where people from all over the world live side by side. With international schools, English-speaking private hospitals and a lively expatriate community, your family can settle into the new routine quickly and comfortably.

Two investment routes to Turkish citizenship

Real estate: USD 400,000

Buy property worth at least USD 400,000 and keep it for 3 years. You can use it as a home for your family or rent it out.

Fund, deposit or bonds: USD 500,000

Invest USD 500,000 in eligible real estate or venture capital funds, a deposit at a bank in Türkiye or government bonds, and keep the investment for 3 years.

Not sure which route fits you? Start your personal roadmap with the form on this page; our investor relations team will go through both routes with you.

The process for South African applicants

  1. A first call in your language: goals, route (property or fund), budget and family composition.

  2. Document preparation at home: legalisation and translation.

  3. Bank account in Türkiye and traceable transfer of the investment amount.

  4. Investment execution: property purchase with valuation and title deed, or fund unit purchase with MKK blockage.

  5. Conformity certificate, investor residence permit and the citizenship application.

  6. Decision and passport issuance; family members included in the same file.

Practical notes for South African applicants

South Africa is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention (in force since 1995). Birth and marriage certificates and the police clearance certificate are apostilled at home and then translated by a sworn translator in Türkiye.

The investment is sent from South Africa by traceable bank transfer to your account in Türkiye. Keep the bank records and the exchange certificate, because they are part of the application file.

South Africa allows its citizens to hold another citizenship alongside their own.

Documents typically requested

  • Valid passport for each applicant
  • Birth certificates and, for spouses, the marriage certificate
  • Police clearance certificate for the main applicant and spouse
  • Biometric photographs
  • Proof of the investment (title deed and valuation, or fund conformity certificate)
  • Bank records showing the foreign exchange transfer and the exchange certificate
  • Health insurance for the residence permit stage

Frequently asked

Is English enough for daily life?

In the big cities, English is widely used in international schools, private hospitals and business. Türkiye has no Turkish language requirement for citizenship, and our team communicates with you in English, explaining each step in plain terms.

Can I keep living in Johannesburg?

Yes. Türkiye does not require you to live in the country to become a citizen. You can keep your home, business and routine in South Africa and visit Türkiye for holidays or work whenever you like.

What if I don't want to manage a property?

Instead of property, you can place USD 500,000 in an eligible investment fund, a deposit at a Turkish bank or government bonds. There are no tenants or maintenance to handle; you simply hold the investment for 3 years.

How are documents from South Africa legalised for a Turkish application?

By apostille: South Africa is a party to the Apostille Convention (in force since 1995).
