Turkish citizenship for Somali families: a second home in a friendly country

A strong friendship has grown between Somalia and Türkiye in recent years, seen in regular flights from Mogadishu to Istanbul, Somali students at Turkish universities and expanding business ties. You can make that closeness permanent for your family. Apply for Turkish citizenship with a USD 400,000 property purchase or a USD 500,000 investment in funds, a bank deposit or government bonds.

Why Türkiye for Somali investors

Direct from Mogadishu to Istanbul

Direct flights link Mogadishu and Istanbul, and Turkish Airlines has served the route for many years. From Istanbul it is easy to connect to every corner of the world. As a Turkish citizen you can come to Türkiye without thinking about a visa and stay as long as you wish.

Close friendship, shared values

The two countries share the same faith, similar family values and a strong tradition of hospitality. Turkish companies have taken part in major projects in Mogadishu, such as the airport and the port. Somali families feel they are in a friendly country and a familiar setting in Türkiye.

A growing community in Türkiye

A growing community of Somali families, students and businesspeople lives in Istanbul and Ankara. Restaurants serving Somali food, mosques and support networks help newly arrived families settle in quickly. Building a new life among people you know is so much easier.

Wide opportunities for your children

Somali students have long studied medicine, engineering and many other subjects at Turkish universities. With English-taught programmes, sports facilities and safe parks, Türkiye gives your children plenty of room to grow. Children under 18 join your file together with your spouse.

Two investment routes to Turkish citizenship

Real estate: USD 400,000

Buy property worth at least USD 400,000 and keep it for 3 years. You can use it as a home for your family or rent it out.

Fund, deposit or bonds: USD 500,000

Invest USD 500,000 in eligible real estate or venture capital funds, a deposit at a bank in Türkiye or government bonds, and keep the investment for 3 years.

The process for Somali applicants

  1. A first call in your language: goals, route (property or fund), budget and family composition.

  2. Document preparation at home: legalisation and translation.

  3. Bank account in Türkiye and traceable transfer of the investment amount.

  4. Investment execution: property purchase with valuation and title deed, or fund unit purchase with MKK blockage.

  5. Conformity certificate, investor residence permit and the citizenship application.

  6. Decision and passport issuance; family members included in the same file.

Practical notes for Somali applicants

Somalia uses consular legalisation for official documents: the issuing authority, the Somalia ministry of foreign affairs and then the Turkish consulate. Our investor relations team coordinates these steps with you.

The investment is sent from Somalia by traceable bank transfer to your account in Türkiye. Keep the bank records and the exchange certificate, because they are part of the application file.

Somalia has its own rules on holding another citizenship. Our investor relations team goes through them with you before you apply, so your plan fits both countries.

Documents typically requested

  • Valid passport for each applicant
  • Birth certificates and, for spouses, the marriage certificate
  • Police clearance certificate for the main applicant and spouse
  • Biometric photographs
  • Proof of the investment (title deed and valuation, or fund conformity certificate)
  • Bank records showing the foreign exchange transfer and the exchange certificate
  • Health insurance for the residence permit stage

Frequently asked

How do I start my application?

We begin with a short call with our investor relations team. We talk about your family, your budget and whether you prefer the property or the fund route. Then we prepare a personal document list and a step-by-step roadmap for you.

Can my spouse and children be part of the same application?

Yes. Your spouse and children under 18 apply in the same file, and one investment covers the whole family. As Turkish citizens, your children can attend school and university in Türkiye, and you can plan your future as a family with ease.

Do I have to live in Türkiye all the time?

No. Citizenship by investment has no residence requirement, and you are not expected to speak Turkish. You can settle in Türkiye or spend part of the year here. Citizenship gives you the freedom to choose either option.

How are documents from Somalia legalised for a Turkish application?

By consular legalisation: documents from Somalia are legalised through the consulate.
